Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What can I expect from my first session?
Your first full session is a chance to talk openly and set the tone for how we’ll work together. We’ll look at what’s been going on, what you’d like support with and how therapy might help. You don’t need to have everything figured out. This is a confidential space to start making sense of things.
How does your process work?
We start with a free 15-minute consultation. That gives you the chance to ask questions and get a feel for how I work. If it feels like a good fit, we book your first session. After that, we’ll work together for as long as you need, short-term or longer, depending on what you’re looking for.
What is it like working with you?
After the consultation, we agree on a regular weekly time. Each session lasts around 50 minutes and takes place online. My style is calm, structured and practical. You’re not expected to be “good at therapy.” Just honest about what’s going on and open to working through it.
What if I’m unsure about starting therapy or coaching?
That’s completely normal. You might be unsure if it’s the right time or if therapy’s for you. The best next step is to book a free consultation. We’ll talk it through and see if it makes sense to take it further.
I’ve never had therapy before. What if I don’t know what to say?
That’s more common than you’d think. You don’t need a plan. We’ll start wherever you’re at, even if it’s just a sense that something’s not right. I’ll guide the process and help you find your own words.
Therapeutic Approach
How can psychotherapy help me?
Psychotherapy gives you a space to explore thoughts, emotions and patterns that might be getting in the way of how you want to live. Whether it’s anxiety, burnout, low mood or relationship stress, it can help you understand your reactions, recognise your needs and move forward with more clarity.
What are your qualifications?
I’m a fully accredited psychotherapist with the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). I also hold a Master’s in Education, Guidance and Counselling from Trinity College Dublin, along with qualifications in law and teaching. I use an integrative approach that draws from person-centred therapy, solution-focused work and other evidence-based models.
Do you offer coaching as well as therapy?
Yes. Some clients benefit from a blend of therapy and coaching, especially when facing career decisions, leadership pressure or big life changes. We can look at practical strategies alongside emotional support, depending on what you need.
Do you work with men who struggle to open up?
Yes, often. Many of the men I work with say they find it easier to talk once we get started. You don’t need to be articulate or overly open. I’ll meet you where you are and support you in a practical, no-pressure way.
Do you work with people living abroad?
Absolutely. I work with expats, international students and professionals living outside Ireland as well as those based here. Online sessions make it easier to get support, wherever you are.
Do you work with businesses or organisations?
Yes. I support leaders, HR teams and organisations with employee wellbeing, stress management and performance support. I also work with individuals who are referred through work schemes or who find me through word of mouth.
Online Sessions and Privacy
How do online sessions work?
Sessions take place via Zoom, WhatsApp or telephone, whichever suits you best. You’ll need a quiet, private space and a reliable internet connection. The process is straightforward, and I’ll talk you through it if you’re new to online therapy.
Are online sessions as effective as face-to-face therapy?
Yes. Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person, especially for issues like anxiety, low mood and life transitions. Many people find it easier to open up from their own space and fit sessions into their day more easily.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. All sessions are confidential and follow the ethical standards of the IACP. The only exception would be if there’s a serious risk of harm to you or someone else. Even then, I’ll always talk it through with you first.
Fees and Cancellations
What happens if I miss a session?
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. If it’s less than that, the full fee applies unless there’s an emergency. I understand that life can be unpredictable, so please let me know and we can change plans if needed.
How often should I have sessions?
Most clients start with weekly sessions for the first six weeks. That gives us time to build trust and momentum. We’ll always agree on a rhythm that fits your goals and your schedule.
